What Is Talent Intelligence?

What Is Talent Intelligence?

Published

Updated

Talent intelligence is the use of internal and external workforce, skills, market, and candidate data to make better hiring, mobility, and workforce planning decisions.

Recruiting data often lives in separate systems: ATS records, sourcing notes, market research, interview feedback, and workforce plans. Talent intelligence tries to connect those signals into decisions.

What to Distinguish

Talent intelligence combines data to support decisions; an ATS records an operational hiring process. Market estimates, inferred skills and observed candidate answers have different evidence strength and should retain their sources and dates.

A Practical Example

Illustrative example: A company plans expansion into a new region. Talent intelligence combines labour market supply, salary expectations, skill availability, and past hiring conversion to choose where to hire and which skills to prioritise.

What to Measure

Use explicit definitions for your reporting. The following are practical measurement choices, not universal benchmarks or claimed product results.

Measure Definition Interpretation
Evidence freshness Records updated within the chosen window ÷ records used for a decision × 100. Choose the window for the question; changing availability needs fresher evidence than completed education.
Internal fill share Roles filled by existing employees ÷ all filled roles in the period × 100. Define transfers and promotions consistently and compare similar role families.

How to Apply It

Start with a decision, such as where to recruit a role or whether to develop skills internally. Record the evidence, uncertainty and owner, then compare the eventual result with the original assumption.

Common Mistakes

  • Building dashboards without decision ownership.
  • Mixing stale and current data.
  • Using skills labels without definitions.
  • Ignoring privacy and consent boundaries.
