What Is Market Mapping?

What Is Market Mapping?

Published

Updated

Market mapping is the systematic research recruiters use to understand the talent landscape for a role, including target companies, skills supply, location, compensation, competitors, and candidate availability.

A hiring plan can fail before the first message is sent if the team does not understand the market. Market mapping turns a vague target profile into a practical sourcing strategy.

What to Distinguish

Market mapping describes the available talent market. Sourcing acts on that research by finding and contacting people. A list of profiles is a starting sample, not a complete count of everyone with a skill.

A Practical Example

Illustrative example: A company wants a senior implementation manager with healthcare software experience in one city. Market mapping shows that the local pool is small, so the team widens remote options and adjusts compensation before launching outreach.

What to Measure

Use explicit definitions for your reporting. The following are practical measurement choices, not universal benchmarks or claimed product results.

Measure Definition Interpretation
Target coverage Relevant organisations or segments researched ÷ those in the agreed research scope × 100. Record exclusions and the date of the research.
Interested candidate yield People expressing relevant interest ÷ people approached within a mapped segment × 100. Do not treat profile counts as availability; outreach results test the map's assumptions.

How to Apply It

Define the work and essential skills, research adjacent sectors and locations, and record evidence dates. Test assumptions about pay, location and availability with current conversations before narrowing the role.

Common Mistakes

  • Mapping only obvious competitors.
  • Using old salary assumptions.
  • Ignoring transferable skills from adjacent sectors.
  • Treating market mapping as sourcing instead of strategy.

Where Skill Society Fits

After market research produces interested applicants, Skill Society can support role-specific screening and evidence review. Use current labour-market research for the market map and confirm any required data connection separately.

Book a demo to discuss your screening workflow, evidence requirements and human review points.
