Excerpt: Conversational AI in recruiting supports candidate questions, screening, scheduling, and follow-up through natural language interactions.

Conversational AI in recruiting is software that uses natural language understanding to communicate with candidates or recruiters through chat, SMS, voice, or email-like exchanges.

Candidates expect quick answers, but recruiters cannot manually respond to every simple question at every hour. Conversational AI can help when it stays within a clear scope and escalates to humans when judgment is needed.

## What to Distinguish

A recruiting chatbot may use fixed rules, language models or both. A voice interview is a different workflow from answering candidate FAQs. Evaluate the specific channel, approved knowledge, escalation behaviour and evidence captured.

## A Practical Example

**Illustrative example:** A candidate asks whether a role allows weekend shifts and needs a quick reschedule link. Conversational AI can answer the policy question from approved content and offer available interview times, while a recruiter handles exceptions.

## What to Measure

Use explicit definitions for your reporting. The following are practical measurement choices, not universal benchmarks or claimed product results.

| Measure | Definition | Interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Conversation completion | Conversations reaching the intended end state ÷ conversations started × 100. | Define success for the task; ending a chat is not necessarily solving the candidate's problem. |
| Human handoff time | Human response timestamp minus the escalation request timestamp. | Include unresolved requests in a waiting queue rather than dropping them from reporting. |

## How to Apply It

Tell candidates they are interacting with automation, state its purpose and provide a visible human support route. Test ambiguous questions, incorrect information and requests outside the tool's approved scope.

## Common Mistakes

- Letting a bot answer questions it has not been approved to answer.
- Pretending automation is a human recruiter.
- Using chatbot responses as hidden selection criteria.
- Making escalation difficult when a candidate needs help.
