Excerpt: Applicant drop-off rate shows where candidates abandon an application, screening step, interview booking flow, or hiring process before completion.

Applicant drop-off rate is the percentage of people who begin an application or hiring step but do not complete it.

High-volume roles can lose qualified people before a recruiter ever sees them. Long forms, unclear expectations, broken mobile flows, and slow follow-up can make the funnel look low quality when the real issue is friction.

## What to Distinguish

For a defined step, drop-off rate = (people who started − people who completed) ÷ people who started × 100. Keep this separate from employer rejection and from people who only viewed the job. State how long candidates have to complete the step.

## A Practical Example

**Illustrative example:** If 200 people start an application and 150 submit it by the agreed cutoff, 50 have not completed it. Drop-off is 50 ÷ 200 × 100 = 25%. This example excludes job viewers who never start and should not include applications still within the completion window.

## What to Measure

Use explicit definitions for your reporting. The following are practical measurement choices, not universal benchmarks or claimed product results.

| Measure | Definition | Interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Application abandonment | Started applications not submitted by the reporting cutoff ÷ application starts × 100. | Deduplicate retries and give recent starters time to finish. |
| Screening invitation completion | Candidates completing the screen ÷ candidates successfully invited × 100. | This uses an invitation denominator, so it is not the same measure as drop-off among starters. |

## How to Apply It

Inspect the journey on a phone, check error logs and ask candidates where they stopped. Compare device, source and role cohorts before attributing abandonment to lack of interest.

## Common Mistakes

- Blaming candidate quality when the form is the bottleneck.
- Adding duplicate questions already answered in a resume.
- Forgetting to test the flow on a phone.
- Treating every abandoned application as lack of interest.

## Where Skill Society Fits

Skill Society offers structured, role-specific screening that candidates can complete on mobile or desktop. Measure completion and feedback in your own workflow rather than assuming that automation will reduce drop-off.
